About Emotional Intelligence It seems really strange to use a word, intelligence, that for must of us has meaning related to our head as we talk about emotions, which most of us relate to our hearts. In order to function well in the world, it is crucial for people to be emotionally aware of themselves and others and have skills in communicating appropriately through their emotions. What we are talking about is the development of our brain's ability to perceive, interpret, and respond to emotional information. Measuring Emotional Intelligence In humans, the emotional components developed before the cognitive components. The most primitive portions of the brain (the amygdala) relate to in the body survival responses. This portion of the brain still exists and still functions every second or our lives. On top of that is the frontal lobe, the portion that gives us speech, inference, problem solving, and other higher order thinking skills. This is the part of our brain that will evaluate a situation and decide if it is threatening or not, what else it might mean, and what our total options of responses might be. How well we perceive, notice, name, and act on these sensations from the body is where we begin to measure emotional intelligence.
