What is EQ?

We use EQ to parallel IQ, which most of you know is a measure of cognitive intelligence, or basically how smart you are. IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient, and refers to your academic age divided by your actual age, then multiplied by 100. So, a 10 year old who had the academic age of a 20 year old would have an IQ of 200 and be considered quite the genius. Well, IQ changes from year to year and stops having a lot of relevance later on. I mean, what is the difference in the academic age of a 30 year old vs. a 40 year old?

For EQ, there is no such ratio, or a number, or scores that indicate genius. We simply use the term to show both the similarity and the difference with cognitive intelligence. We report emotional intelligence as high, medium, or low. Remember, though, that this is incredibly dynamic and can rapidly change. It is not a matter of ability, as we are all born with emotional brilliance. It is simply a matter of focus and awareness. Just reading an article on emotional intelligence will actually increase your EQ. Simply visualizing yourself being empathetic and noticing other people's emotions can cause your EQ to skyrocket. Try it!
